For the second year in a row, my daughter and I loaded up the car with snacks and drove to Fresno County, California to visit the largest agricultural area of California (and possibly the United States!). Our end destination: visiting local farms on the Fresno Fruit Trail in Central California.
Looking for something fun to do in the LA area this weekend? Head on over to Orcutt Ranch in the west end of The Valley for their annual orange tree fruit picking. This is a city park and historical center with some great history and well worth visiting. It’s going to be hot though, so come early.

The farmers markets are about to explode with tomatoes of all shapes, sizes and colors. In my own garden, my tomatoes are starting to produce and I can’t wait to pick the first ones. April 22 will mark the global celebration of Earth Day, started in 1970 by US Senator Gaylord Nelson after observing the devastation of the 1969 Santa Barbara oil spill. Growing up on the west coast just south of Santa Barbara, I can recall how ‘normal’ it was to come home after a day on the beach and clean the tar off my feet.
Santa Monica has quite a few markets going throughout the week. The one downtown is on Arizona, every Saturday from 8am – 1pm. (There is also a market here on Wednesdays from 8:30am – 1:30pm) The Saturday market, however, is also known as the organic market, and has the largest percentage of organic growers of all the other SM markets.
