I find some of the best dried fruits and almonds every Saturday at the Verni Farms stand at the Calabasas Farmers Market. Verni Farms is more than dried fruit, though. With 300 acres of olives on their Clovis, CA farm, their cold pressed olive oil gets nothing but rave reviews and is pressed by the family, as well.
Verni Farms has been family run since it was first established in 1923 in the small Italian village of Sannicandro di Bari. In 1980, the second generation of Verni came to Clovis (cold press machinery with them) and continued the olive oil family business. Want to get some locally grown and produced olive oil and support California agriculture? This is the olive oil for you!
Besides the olives, their next biggest crop is almonds at 105 acres. Olives, almonds, apples, cherries, figs, oranges… offered fresh and dried at numerous farmers markets year round. (See list below.)
I also love their raisins and dried plums and, well, everything I’ve tried. But here’s my suggestion: Pick up some of their amazing smoked almonds and dried cherries and mix them together. You’ll thank me (or thank Kirk, the super nice guy that works at my market, for the awesome tip!).
