Thinking of picking up grapefruits at the farmers market this weekend? Instead, head on over to Orcutt Ranch for their annual grapefruit picking, Saturday and Sunday, 7am – 2pm.
Fill up a huge bag for just $3, or a box for $5! (For an additional $1, you can rent a picker but I was just there and you don’t necessarily need it.) This would be a great family outing, just make sure everyone has on close toed shoes, per the park’s suggestion.
Orcutt Ranch is in West Hills, CA and was once Rancho Sombre del Roble (cir. 1926), the vacation and retirement estate of William and Mary Orcutt (a petroleum geologist and the man that discovered prehistoric fossils at the La Brea Tar Pits!). The City of Los Angeles acquired the property in 1966 and designated 24 acres of the estate as Historic-Cultural Monument No. 31.
For years and years, the park has had their annual White Grapefruit picking toward the end of February and Valencia Orange picking mid-July. They also have a large area set aside for community gardens, should you be interested in renting a space.
