Sure you might be able to find a few organic veggie and herb plants at a grocery store or somewhere else, but did you know you can head over to Two Dog Organic Nursery and shop to your heart’s content on organic plants, organic soils and planters? This is truly a one-stop shop for urban farming. And if you time it right and find owner Jo Anne in the garden, you’ll also receive an incredible amount of warmth and knowledge about the plants she so fondly raises.
Jo Anne, Alejandro, and their two adorable dogs Jake and Lalo (hence the name) have lovingly grown and maintained every seedling at Two Dogs Nursery for the last 6 years. As Jo Anne recalls, she just had an undeniable urge to get her hands in the soil but had a few four-legged obstacles. And that’s when, through a friend’s suggestion, she started using Earthboxes to raise her crops up off the ground and away from Jake and Lalo’s curious nature. One box lead to another box until Jo Anne was overcome with an idea that wouldn’t rest: growing her own food and living a more sustainable lifestyle.
After becoming a certified organic retail grower, the nursery spread out to every nook and cranny of their Los Angeles yard, as well as inside their home! Every plant is grown from only USDA-Certified Organic seeds, in OMRI-listed soils, with OMRI-listed organic worm castings and organic fertilizers. And approximately 80% are heirloom varieties making for some amazing finds here at the nursery.
Jo Anne is really excited about a few of the new crops this year: Edamame, Amaranth, glass gem popcorn and pickling cucumbers. (And, by the way, the Amaranth seeds can be ground into a gluten-free flour!) But it really feels like this neighborhood nursery has everything: beans, okra, tomatoes, carrots, peppers, edible flowers… did I say tomatoes? Way too many to list, so take a peek at the Two Dog Organic Nursery’s web site for a complete list of everything they carry.
Or better yet, head on over there this weekend!!! Although normally open just Wednesdays and Fridays by appointment only, this weekend is their Annual Spring Kick-Off Sale and Food drive from 10-3. “Admission” is a mandatory food donation that goes to the LA Regional Food Bank. Although the focus is on the heirloom tomatoes, there is a 10% discount on everything at the nursery, including the Eathboxes, soils, etc… What a great way to get started if you’ve been considering your own little backyard garden.
Personally, I was eyeballing the blueberry and lemon trees and maybe some basil and the edamame, but there is so much to choose from! Maybe I’ll see you there?
